Why automate your trading strategy?

Imagine never missing a perfect trade setup again – no more staring at charts all day, no more emotional decisions. That’s the power of automated trading.

If you’re wondering how to automate a trading strategy, you’re in the right place. TradingView, combined with third-party platforms and webhooks, allows traders to execute trades automatically based on pre-defined conditions.

But here’s the catch: most automation methods require coding in Pine Script.

The Alpha Leonis Composite Indicator (ALT CI) suite provides powerful automated trading tools for TradingView without requiring any coding.

This guide covers:

• How to set up and automate a trading strategy on TradingView

• Using ALT CI to manage trade alerts without coding

• Connecting TradingView alerts to a brokerage, exchange, or third-party platform

• Setting up webhooks for seamless trade execution

Step 1: Create a trading strategy in TradingView

Before automating, you need a solid trading strategy.

Using the ALT CI trading suite, you can:

• Set up and backtest a strategy that fits your risk tolerance

• Use pre-built indicators for smart trade signals

• Save time with automated trade execution alerts

For more details, every ALT CI subscription includes tutorial videos.

Step 2: Create a bot on your trading platform

Once you have a strategy, the next step is setting up a bot on your chosen trading platform.

Your bot acts as the middleman between TradingView and your broker or exchange.

Setting up your trading bot:

1. Choose a brokerage, exchange, or third-party trade management platform.

2. Create a dedicated bot for your strategy.

3. Define your position sizing and risk management settings.

4. Assign entries, exits, stop-losses, and take profits. These can be managed in TradingView via ALT CI or on your exchange.

5. Copy the bot’s unique ID and alert message format for later use.

Once the bot is ready, the next step is configuring TradingView alerts.

Step 3: Configure alert messages in ALT Strategy Builder

Now it’s time to link TradingView to your bot so that every buy or sell signal triggers a trade.

For a long trade:

• Copy the long position entry message from your exchange, broker, or third-party platform.

• In TradingView, open ALT Strategy Builder settings.

• Scroll to the Third Party Alert Messages section.

• Paste the message in the Long Open field.

For a long exit:

• Copy the long exit message from your exchange or broker.

• Open ALT Strategy Builder settings.

• Scroll to the Third Party Alert Messages section.

• Paste the message in the Long Exit All field.

For a short trade:

Follow the same process using the respective short entry and exit fields.

Step 4: set up a TradingView alert

Alerts are what trigger trades automatically, so they must be set up correctly.

Creating an alert in TradingView:

• On your TradingView chart, right-click and select Add Alert, or click the Alert button on the top panel.

• Under Condition, choose ALT Strategy Builder.

• Click Add a custom name to name your alert.

• Set an expiration date. TradingView Premium users can leave it open-ended.

• Do not edit the Message field – it must match your bot’s format.

• Under the Notifications tab, select how you want to be notified (email, app, SMS).

At this point, your trading strategy is nearly automated, but it still needs to be linked to your exchange via webhooks.

Step 5: Set up webhook integration

Webhooks are key to seamless trade execution. They allow TradingView to send trade signals directly to your broker or exchange without needing an API.

How to set up webhooks:

1. Obtain your Webhook URL from your trading platform (exchange or broker).

2. Go to TradingView and edit the alert you created earlier.

3. Under Notifications, find the Webhook URL field.

4. Paste the Webhook URL provided by your exchange or broker.

5. Ensure your alert message is formatted correctly to match the broker’s requirements. Check their documentation for details.

6. Click Save.

Once this is set up, TradingView alerts will execute real trades.

Step 6: Monitor trade execution

Even automated strategies need to be monitored.

How to monitor your trades

• Check the TradingView alert log to ensure signals are being triggered correctly.

• Verify that executed trades match your strategy rules.

• Monitor your exchange or broker trade history to confirm correct execution.

If trades aren’t executing properly, double-check your webhook settings and TradingView alert conditions.

Final notes: things to watch out for

Automating a trading strategy is powerful, but it requires attention to detail.

Risk management is key

Even automated strategies need stop losses and risk controls. Market conditions can change fast.

Webhook limits

Check your trading platform’s webhook limits to avoid exceeding request quotas.

Exchange-specific requirements

Every exchange or broker formats orders differently. Always follow their API or webhook documentation.
